State task force will look at substance abuse, mental health care for ...

To help the increasing number of veterans and military service personnel who are needing treatment for substance abuse and mental health issues in Kentucky, a task force has been assembled to come up with strategies that show the most promise in providing care.

The team, made up of military personnel as well as health care experts, will go to a conference in Washington, D.C., to gain learn what is working elsewhere. The goal is to strengthen statewide behavioral health care systems and services, a press release from Gov. Steve Beshear's office says.

Over the past three years, the number of veterans seeking mental-health care has risen dramatically, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. About 335,000 veterans live in Kentucky. There are also 45,000 active-duty personnel in Kentucky and about 8,400 members of the Kentucky Army National Guard and Kentucky Air National Guard.

"This is an extremely important and timely topic that requires collaboration across federal, state and local lines," said Col. David Thompson, executive director of the Kentucky Commission on Military Affairs.?Task force members include Thompson; Maj. Gen. Edward W. Tonini, Kentucky adjutant general; state Rep. John Tilley, D-Hopkinsville; representatives from the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs, military and civilian health facilities and the Kentucky court system. Biodiesel From Sewage Sludge

Emission production as you state it is only a problem on a local level where the emissions are most concentrated (dense cities). Even electric cars will have emissions (either in production or at whatever plant is making the electricity for it). It's the part about digging up materials which have been locked underground for millions of years and then releasing those emissions into the atmosphere that is the global problem. If all of the energy and consumables your vehicle used during it's entire lifetime (including manufacture) were harvested from plants or otherwise scraped off of the surface of the biosphere instead of from within the ground you would essentially be close to net-neutral impact on the planet as far as emissions are concerned (not that there is no impact, it would just be ridiculously low impact).

Biodiesel (as usable in my VW Jetta) is only a little less efficient than petrol / oil based diesel. Mileage is about 5mpg lower or so, but you have to make sure the biodiesel is clean of other contaminants which can be a bit laborious depending on the original source. Of course most people I am aware of will typically use an 85/15 blend for better performance (15% regular diesel).

As far as emissions go, I don't think it's too much different but I don't know much about that. I guess it would entirely depend on how "clean" and viable the input is.

In any case, if we can turn something which truly does not have a better use other than to be cleaned (at great expense) and sent back into the biome into a usable fuel at less expense I fully support research into it. It seems to be much smarter than ethanol where suddenly the price of fuel becomes linked to the price of food. We honestly don't currently have a better use for human sewage anyways considering it is not considered fit for fertilizer either. Besides, if this comes to America just think of how much fatty acids are already present in the McSewage, or how we could just re-introduce Olean oil if we needed to increase production (how's that for a disgusting thought?).

Romney skirts mention of war in acceptance speech

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney did not mention the war in Afghanistan, where 79,000 US troops are fighting, in his speech accepting the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday. The last time a Republican presidential nominee did not address war was 1952, when Dwight Eisenhower spoke generally about American power and spreading freedom around the world but did not explicitly mention armed conflict. Below are examples of how other Republican nominees have addressed the issue over the years, both in peacetime and in war.

1956: "No one is more aware than I that it is the young who fight the wars, and it is the young who give up years of their lives to military training and service. It is not enough that their elders promise 'Peace in our time;' it must be peace in their time too, and in their children's time; indeed, my friends, there is only one real peace now, and that is peace for all time." ? Dwight D. Eisenhower

1960: "Because we have already paid a terrible price in lives and resources to learn that appeasement leads not to peace, but to war, it will, indeed, take great leadership to steer us through the years, avoiding the extreme of belligerency on the one hand and appeasement on the other." ? Richard Nixon

1964: "Yesterday it was Korea. Tonight it is Vietnam. Make no bones of this. Don't try to sweep this under the rug. We are at war in Vietnam. And yet the president, who is commander in chief of our forces, refuses to say ? refuses to say, mind you ? whether or not the objective over there is victory." ? Barry Goldwater

1968: "When the strongest nation in the world can be tied down for four years in a war in Vietnam with no end in sight ... then it's time for new leadership for the United States of America." ? Nixon

1972: "Standing in this convention hall four years ago, I pledged to seek an honorable end to the war in Vietnam. We have made great progress toward that end. We have brought over half a million men home, and more will be coming home." ? Nixon

1976: "Two years ago America was mired in withdrawal from Southeast Asia. A decade of Congresses had shortchanged our global defenses and threatened our strategic posture. Mounting tension between Israel and the Arab nations made another war seem inevitable. ... Today America is at peace and seeks peace for all nations. Not a single American is at war anywhere on the face of this Earth tonight." - Gerald Ford

1980: "Four times in my lifetime America has gone to war, bleeding the lives of its young men into the sands of beachheads, the fields of Europe and the jungles and rice paddies of Asia. We know only too well that war comes not when the forces of freedom are strong, but when they are weak. It is then that tyrants are tempted. We simply cannot learn these lessons the hard way again without risking our destruction." ? Ronald Reagan

1984: "Today our troops have newer and better equipment; their morale is higher. The better armed they are, the less likely it is they will have to use that equipment. But if, heaven forbid, they're ever called upon to defend this nation, nothing would be more immoral than asking them to do so with weapons inferior to those of any possible opponent. ... None of the four wars in my lifetime came about because we were too strong. It's weakness that invites adventurous adversaries to make mistaken judgments." ? Reagan

1988: "We have a new relationship with the Soviet Union. The INF treaty ? the beginning of the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, the beginning of the end of the Soviet proxy war in Angola and with it the independence of Namibia. Iran and Iraq move toward peace. ... Weakness and ambivalence lead to war. Weakness tempts aggressors. Strength stops them. I will not allow this country to be made weak again." ? George H.W. Bush

1992: "This convention is the first at which an American president can say the cold war is over, and freedom finished first. ... And while the U.S. postwar strategy was largely bipartisan, the fact remains that the liberal McGovern wing of the other party, including my opponent, consistently made the wrong choices." ? George H.W. Bush

1996: "And furthermore, the lesson has always been clear, if we are prepared to defend, if we are prepared to fight many wars and greater wars than any wars that come, we will have to fight fewer wars and lesser wars and perhaps no wars at all." ? Robert Dole

2000: "Little more than a decade ago, the Cold War thawed and, with the leadership of Presidents Reagan and Bush, that wall came down. But instead of seizing this moment, the Clinton-Gore administration has squandered it. We have seen a steady erosion of American power and an unsteady exercise of American influence. Our military is low on parts, pay and morale." ? George W. Bush

2004: "This election will also determine how America responds to the continuing danger of terrorism, and you know where I stand ... We are staying on the offensive, striking terrorists abroad so we do not have to face them here at home." ? George W. Bush

2008: "We face many threats in this dangerous world, but I'm not afraid of them. I'm prepared for them. I know how the military works, what it can do, what it can do better and what it should not do. I know how the world works. I know the good and the evil in it. I know how to work with leaders who share our dreams of a freer, safer and more prosperous world, and how to stand up to those who don't. I know how to secure the peace." ? John McCain

Tiny mites on your face may cause rosacea

Scientists may have finally found what sparks the inflamed and reddened skin in people suffering from rosacea: tiny mites that crawl across most of our faces, unseen and unfelt. The new finding may eventually lead to more effective treatments, researchers say.

National Retirement Fund exemption

28 August 2012 Tonga Power Limited (TPL) Exempted from the National Retirement Benefits Fund (NRBF) and no longer a registered member effective from 3 August 2012. TPL Employer and Employee representative terminates.

The NRBS Act 2010 sets up a retirement fund scheme for its members. Whilst the scheme of the Act is for compulsory contribution by members there is provision for exemption from the provisions of the Act. The exemption is predicated on the employer providing the same or a better retirement benefit for its employees.

Tonga Power Limited applied to be exempted and NRBF Board approved the application after due process for exemption by TPL effective from 3 August 2012. The constitution of the Board is by law to be made up of persons representing employee and employer members of the Scheme.

The Term of Office for elected representatives is three years but terminates earlier if the representative ceases to be a registered employer or employee. TPL is no longer a registered member and TPL's employer and employee elected representatives cease.

NRBF Board wishes to convey its appreciation to the former employer and employee representatives of TPL on its Board, Mr. William Edwards Jr. and Mr. Steven ?Esau for their important contribution during their time on the Board.

Dispatches From the Republican National Convention

Can I be even tougher on Ann Romney's speech than John was? I know we've agreed, as a class, to grade candidates' spouses on a generous curve. They're all the closest adviser, the secret weapon, et cetera, and?as best I can recall?their convention speeches always get good reviews.

But Ann's seemed to miss the mark not only because, as John neatly outlined, it was entirely free of revealing anecdote. I felt as though it confused hardship with the humdrum in a way that seemed even more detached from the way most Americans live than any car elevator or Swiss bank account. "I read somewhere that Mitt and I have a 'storybook marriage,' " she said, in the moment where we're supposed to begin to learn that the Romneys are not as tragically perfect as they think we believe they are. "Well, in the storybooks I read, there were never long, long, rainy winter afternoons in a house with five boys screaming at once."

Really? What dystopia is this she describes? Isn't five adorable kids playing in a house of one's own pretty much the idealized tableau of suburban domestic bliss? Isn't this the American Dream as the National Association of Realtors has sold it to us for years?

"A storybook marriage?" she tells us. "No, not at all. What Mitt Romney and I have is a real marriage."

Then Ann explained to us that the Romneys had it rough. "We walked to class together, shared the housekeeping, and ate a lot of pasta and tuna fish," she went on. "Our desk was a door propped up on sawhorses."

These were the speech's rare bits of color, the details that were supposed to give us a sense of how the Romneys had lived their very real marriage. Ann was deploying status signifiers, but what exactly did they signify? Is having to eat tuna supposed to signal that Mitt "was not handed success"? Is pasta an unheralded grain of affliction?

While I'm generating an inventory of Ann's oddball use of detail, what about this roll call of society's indispensable roles performed by women? "We're the mothers, we're the wives, we're the grandmothers, we're the big sisters, we're the little sisters, we're the daughters," she said. "You know it's true, don't you?"

Yes, we know it's true that women are mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters; every family tree attests to it. Like declaring their marriage a ?real marriage," Ann had aimed to share something about how she sees the world. But when she tried to take her experience and universalize it, she could come up with nothing better than truisms about human nature.

These weren't insights; they were facts.

Chinese manufacturer unveils Samsung Galaxy S3, iPhone 5 rival

Chinese firm Xiaomi has unveiled a new handset called the Mi-Two which sees the debut of Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset, the APQ8064, which has four Krait cores clocked at 1.5GHz, 2MB L2 cache as well as the Adreno 320 GPU which is clocked at 533MHz.

There?s also 2GB of LPDDR2 RAM, 16GB onboard storage with a microSD card slot, a 4.3in IPS display with a 1,280 x 720 resolution, Wi-Fi display, a 3.9mm bezel, a massive 3000mAh battery, an 8-megapixel camera, a front facing one and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (rather than Ice Cream Sandwich) with a proprietary MI user interface.

The real surprise though is the fact that Xiaomi has managed to price the phone at only 1,999 Hong Kong Dollars or around ?200 inc. VAT when it goes on sale in October.

That?s less than half the price of the Samsung Galaxy S3 and a 60 per cent less than the iPhone 4S.

It has yet to be confirmed whether the phone will be available outside Hong Kong and indeed whether it will go on sale in the UK. Maybe Expansys, Clove or Handtec should look into getting it over our shores.

Russian punk band found guilty of hooliganism, given 2 years

Click on the photo to see Pussy Riot slide show (Pussy Riot/Live Journal)

Three members of Pussy Riot -- a Russian punk band and feminist collective that mocked Russian president Vladamir Putin during a "punk prayer" in a Moscow cathedral--have been found guilty of? hooliganism and sentenced to two years in jail

Judge Marina Syrova announced the verdict from a district court in central Moscow, about two miles from the Christ the Saviour Cathedral where the guerrilla group performed its "flash" stunt.

The band members--Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, Maria Alyokhina, 24, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30--were arrested on March 3, several weeks after the performance, and charged with "hooliganism." They've been in jail ever since.

Their trial drew enormous international interest, sparking catcalls from international free-speech advocates and spawning dozens of protests. Some of those were reported on Twitter during the verdict and sentencing, involving an impromptu musical concert and some protests in public areas in Moscow and London.

Madonna, Bjork, Paul McCartney and Courtney Love were among a long list of musicians to come out in support of Pussy Riot, calling on the Russian government to set the band members free. Last week in Berlin, more than 400 people joined a protest led by electro-singer Peaches.

[Slideshow: Russian feminist punk band on trial]

"In one of the most extravagant displays," the Associated Press said, "Reykjavik Mayor Jon Gnarr rode through the streets of the Icelandic capital in a Gay Pride parade ... dressed like a band member--wearing a bright pink dress and matching balaclava--while lip-synching to one of Pussy Riot's songs."

What started as "a punk-infused political prank," London's Independent said, "has rapidly snowballed into one of the most notorious court cases in post-Soviet Russian history."

Five members of the group, which formed in 2011, were arrested in January after a video of a Putin-baiting performance in Moscow's Red Square circulated online. They were detained for several hours by police, fined and released, NPR said.

But the 10-member Pussy Riot, inspired by the American "riot grrrl" movement and bands like Bikini Kill, vowed more protest performances.

Pussy Riot's stunt at Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral, a Russian Orthodox church, was a response, they said, to Patriarch Kirill's public support of Putin in the build-up to Russia's presidential election. Putin won a third term as president in March.

"Holy Mother, send Putin packing!" the group sang.

The Guardian called the trial, which began on July 30, "worse than Soviet era."

"By the end of the first week of Pussy Riot's trial," the Guardian's Miriam Elder wrote last week, "everyone in the shabby Moscow courthouse was tired. Guards, armed with submachine guns, grabbed journalists and threw them out of the room at will. The judge, perched in front of a shabby Russian flag, refused to look at the defense. And the police dog--a 100 [pound] black Rottweiler--no longer sat in the corner she had occupied since the start of Russia's trial of the year, but barked and foamed at the mouth as if she were in search of blood."

Lawyers for the women complained during the trial that the trio were being starved and tortured in prison. Two threatened to go on a hunger strike after they were initially jailed.

"Their treatment has caused deep disquiet among many Russians, who feel the women are--to coin a phrase from the 1967 trial of members of the Rolling Stones--butterflies being broken on a wheel," the BBC's Daniel Sandford wrote.

Syrova was subjected to unspecified threats during the trial, Russian authorities announced on Thursday--assigning bodyguards to protect her before and after she announced the verdict.

Several Russian pop stars, though, questioned the outpouring of support for Pussy Riot.

"What is so great about Pussy Riot that all these international stars support them?" Russian singer Valeria wrote on her website, according to Reuters. "They must be saying this because someone ordered them to."

"Art and politics are inseparable for us," the band said in an interview with the online newspaper Gazeta.ru in February. "We try to make political art. Performances and their rehearsals are our job. Life in Pussy Riot takes a lot of time."

Advantages of Creating a Nevada Corporation or LLC | 2leep.in ...

There are numerous good things about creating a Nevada LLC, or Limited Liability Company. You can make an application for your organization to become an LLC, except in cases where it?s a traditional bank or an insurance provider, and benefit from the features of this kind of business entity. Now that you will find Web companies recommending to perform basically all the work for your LLC creation, it can be easier, speedier, and advantageous. This post discusses the specific qualities of LLCs and how to shape one conveniently.

What exactly is an LLC?
A Limited Liability Company, which lots of people confuse with a Limited Liability ?Corporation,? is a format for firms state statutes permit. It?s not a corporation, even though it is often rather similar. Some LLC characteristics tend to be consistent with those of a partnership. There are, however, no limits on ownership in most states. Therefore an LLC?s ?members? may include individuals, additional LLCs, corporations, or foreign entities. Single membership is acceptable in several states, but there is simply no limit to the number of members in LLCs.

Exactly what can I Get from an LLC?
Developing an LLC presents several positive aspects. Possibly one of the most interesting of these includes a few features an LLC shares with a Nevada corporation, just like safety for your personal property. As soon as your business gets to be an LLC, it will become a separate entity, meaning the state perceives it as an ?individual? apart from yourself. This protects you against legal liabilities for which your organization may be accountable.

For instance, you have a Nevada LLC that produces shoes, and one of your merchandise plays a part in the trauma of a buyer. The buyer can file suit for damages, but your LLC can respond to the charges, not you personally. If it turns out the court awards the consumer, your LLC will reward that customer with its resources. They cannot acquire your house, your automobile, or other private things. Your LLC is a separate being.

Likewise, a Nevada LLC provides decreased risks for you with regards to auditing. The state of Nevada is a superb location to develop a Limited Liability Company for its solid relationship with LLCs and corporations. A great number of entities have excelled in this place. Even the Supreme Court of Nevada normally defends corporate privacy in its authority.

Precisely how do I develop an LLC?
Forming an LLC online is usually easier as compared to doing it the traditional approach. A few World wide web businesses might help your small business accomplish that position despite the fact that they do not have relationship with the Secretary of State or any government agency.

These firms have spent many years helping entrepreneurs finish their application for LLCs and corporations. Whichever state you are, check if you can form, let?s say, an Arizona LLC by means of online channels.

Find out if they also have sufficient experience with creating a corporation in Nevada if this describes the business entity you like. These types of businesses can instruct you even more on the distinction between an LLC and a corporation, and precisely what rewards you can access from each. Establish your corporation with the aid of an organization online offering to make this process less complicated and quicker, in order to target business development and also other more urgent jobs.

Hear it now! Devo unleashes Romney dog song

Nam Y. Huh / AP file

Devo at Lollapalooza in Chicago on Aug. 6, 2010.

By Andy Greene, Rolling Stone

Devo's Jerry Casale wants it to be known that their newest song, "Don't Roof Rack Me, Bro," isn't meant as a partisan statement?-- even though it viciously mocks Mitt Romney for strapping his Irish Setter, Seamus, to the roof of his car for a 1983 family vacation.

"This isn't a red-state thing or Devo stumping for Obama," he says. "But I think any animal lover that hears the story will learn so much about the character flaw of Romney. It's just a deal-breaker about the man. My God, the world is a scary place with seven billion people. What you want in a leader is a guy with some humanity at his core. I just don't feel that Mitt does."

Listen to the song at RollingStone.com

In 2008, Devo did a fundraising show for President Obama in their hometown of Akron, Ohio.?Does Casale approve of his job performance over the past three-and-a-half years? "No!" he says. "Absolutely not. Devo are not naive people. If anyone still thinks that the President of the United States of America runs things, they really live in the Wizard of Oz-land. My God, we're a plutocracy. We're owned and leveraged by global corporations."

He still plans on voting for Obama, though. "That's the safer choice," he says.?"Believe me. If we have real choice. There isn't freedom of choice anymore. The difference between the two parties is like the difference between Pepsi and Coke."

"Don't Roof Rack Me, Bro" has already gotten more attention than Devo's 2010 LP, "Something for Everybody." "That album had Warner Bros. and a brilliant marketing team behind it," Casale says. "It never got us anything like we did with this song. It's topical and we really tapped into something."

There are no plans for any future recordings, but Casale is quite open to the idea of posting anything they might record on the Internet. "The promise of the Internet and digital distribution is that things can be instant and topical," he says.?"It doesn't need to be from the old-school publicity mill. You can respond quickly, guerilla style. For years that was more a theory than a reality. Finally, I see there is a democratization of getting an audience."

Devo tend to only play a handful of shows a year, but this fall they are touring America with Blondie and then later heading to Australia. "We usually only do a few shows because [Devo frontman] Mark Mothersbaugh doesn't like touring," Casale says. "The rest of us love it. But Mark liked what was coming up and he liked these dates ... People expect us to come onstage with walkers, but we can really still bring it."

Devo's setlist is primarily drawn from their classic late 1970s/early 1980s catalog, but "Don't Roof Rack Me, Bro" might make it into their live act. "The momentum is already building and we're going to rehearse in a week," Casale says. "That doesn't seem outside the realm of possibility at all."

They're also creating an iPhone app for the tune called the Crate Escape?-- a game where players attempt to free Seamus from his crate.

Olympic Viewing: Men's basketball finale

You'll be happy to know this, Magic, Michael and Larry. Doug Collins is on your side.

Collins, finishing up his fourth year as NBC's Olympic basketball analyst, said he believes the U.S. Dream Team from the 1992 Barcelona Games would beat the current United States team in a hypothetical matchup. The 1992 team's front line is too imposing, he said.

The more important matter at hand for the U.S. team is Sunday's gold-medal game against Spain. Spain has a solid front line, too, but will succeed or fail on the strength of its guard play, Collins said.

The Americans are "close to where they want to be, but all of the pressure is on them to win the gold medal," he said. "Otherwise, it's going to be a failure for them. They know that. It's gold or bust for them."

Collins is happy for a day off between games because his day job keeps him pretty busy. The current Philadelphia 76ers head coach has watched from London as the 76ers participated in a four-team megadeal that landed Andrew Bynum from the L.A. Lakers while sending Andre Iguodala to Denver.

Michael Jordan once said that participating on the Dream Team helped him learn some weaknesses of his All-Star teammates, things that he could exploit in later games. Collins said he knows the current players pretty well. The advantage to his analyst's job comes in getting to know some of the international players, and evaluate whether they could play in the NBA.

Being a current coach also brings him fresh material for his analyst's role.

"A big part of the Olympics is being able to story tell and to make it personal," he said, "so you know these guys by more than just their numbers."

The strength of the U.S. team this year is its versatility, with so many players able to operate all over the court. The team has proven to be explosive offensively when the 3-point shots are falling. Collins said he always believed the team's supposed weakness in the front court was overstated since the U.S. has steadily outrebounded foes.

London is also providing some family time for Collins, whose son Chris is an assistant with the U.S. team and helps scout opponents and run practice drills.

"This is not only a professional situation for me, but I have a lot of personal ties that make it very rewarding," Collins said.

WALKING TALL: One of the joys of the Olympics ? and of NBC Sports' daytime coverage ? is getting absorbed in an exotic sport you would have no other reason to watch. Saturday's unexpected pleasure was the women's 20-kilometer race walk, and seeing if Russian Olga Kaniskina could keep a big lead against younger countrywoman Elena Lashmanova

She couldn't, and her small body was filled with mental and physical pain at the end.

UNHAPPY SILVER: Tough to remember a group of people looking so miserable receiving flowers as Brazil's silver-medal soccer team, following the surprising loss to Mexico. The players made American gymnast McKayla Maroney look happy.

PHELPS ON LINKS: What's next after the pool for Michael Phelps? Improving his golf game. Golf Channel said Phelps has signed on as the next star of "The Haney Project," the series that depicts Tiger Woods' former swing coach trying to improve the game of a celebrity guest. Now retired from swimming, Phelps said he's looking for things to keep him motivated. "We look forward to chronicling Michael's transition from the most-decorated Olympian in history to a frustrated golfer trying to enjoy playing the world's greatest golf courses," said Mike McCarley, network president. "Golfers everywhere will be able to relate to his quest to improve his game."

RATINGS: Due to processing issues, the Nielsen company said no viewership estimate was available for NBC's Friday telecast.

UPCOMING: Sunday's music-filled closing ceremony is expected to make a rousing finish for the games.

It's not teaching, it's learning - Anne Rooney

I'm very busy at the moment (which is the poor excuse for this post being late today). The main reason is that as well as writing, I'm teaching a summer school in creative writing to American students. The summer school is run by Pembroke and King's Colleges in Cambridge, and the students get to live and work for eight weeks in a lovely environment. They have one-to-one supervisions in King's College (in the courtyard cafe when weather allows) and lectures in Cambridge Union Society. They find the setting delightfully and quaintly English and ancient, and help me to see it afresh.

I'm not really of the belief that you can teach creative writing, but I do think you can encourage people to learn and help them to develop their skills and ideas. What I hadn't anticipated when I started - and it's now six weeks into the eight-week term - is how much I would learn from them.

They bring not only their own wonderful ideas for stories, their voices, their styles and their questions, but also their very different lives and experiences. They are wonderful people. They shine like jewels, sparkling with enthusiasm and insight. Some have a lot of experience of creative writing already and produce quite breathtaking work. Some are new to it and their experiments, though not always successful, are always interesting.

The programme is great, because they have one-to-one supervision and lectures from published, professional authors. Brian Keaney is the other supervisor, and we invite writers of other genres to come as guest lecturers. None of us is a professional teacher of creative writing - we all make a living from writing. That makes it very different from the teaching they get in their home universities.

It has been hard work - there have been 13-hour days and coming home to a house with no food in it. But it has never been exhausting as the students radiate energy. They feed my inspiration and creativity as much as (I hope) I nurture theirs. I shall be very sorry to see them go, but hope they have learned a lot and expect to see at least some of them in publishers' lists in the not-too-distant future.

How Facebook Could Save Its Shattered Share Price

Defcon FacebookIf Facebook's share price continues to plummet, it's going going to have a lot tougher time signing and retaining the top talent who can answer its big questions.?It needs more revenue, or at least clear ways of generating it to persuade investors.?But payments aren't growing anymore, and its current ads aren't enough. It can't wait to set the money-making wheels in motion. It needs decisive action, immediately. Here's my breakdown of exactly what Facebook needs to do next if it wants to start clawing its way from $20 back to its $38 IPO price.

Kurd rebels in Syria 'common threat': Turkey, Iraq Kurds

Turkey and Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region have warned that they will consider any violent group that abuses a Syrian power vacuum a "common threat", in a reference to Kurdish rebels in Syria.

"The new Syria should be free of any terrorist and extremist group or organisation," Turkey's foreign minister Ahmet Davutoglu and Iraqi Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani said in a rare joint statement released late Wednesday.

The statement comes after the pair held talks in the northern Iraqi city of Arbil over the situation in Syria and reports that some parts of the country had fallen to the Kurdish rebels.

"Any attempt to exploit the power vacuum by any violent group or organisation will be considered as a common threat," said Barzani and Davutoglu in their joint statement.

Davutoglu was visiting the oil-rich city of Kirkuk on Thursday, Turkish media reported, adding that the foreign minister would bring together Syrian opposition groups.

The Democratic Union Party (PYD), the Syrian ally of the outlawed Turkish Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), had allegedly seized control of several towns along Turkey's border with Syria, alarming Ankara, which promptly increased defences on the border.

Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said last week Ankara would not hesitate to strike Kurdish rebels in Syria.

Ankara claims some of the Kurdish rebels in Syria are those who have been forced to move from their hideouts in mountainous zones in northern Iraq, after Turkey staged several air strikes in the area to drive out the rebels.

A military drill close to the Syrian border and an increase in the firepower deployment on the border followed the movement in northern Syria.

Ankara had already fortified the border region after a Turkish plane was brought down by Syria on June 22.

The PKK took up arms in Kurdish-majority southeastern Turkey in 1984, sparking a conflict that has claimed some 45,000 lives.

A League of Their Own: DC's Social Sports Entrepreneurs

Take a trip to DC?s monuments or the National Mall on a weekday evening and forget seeing tourists! Instead the fields are crowded with one of the city?s most popular social scenes: social rec leagues ? here to help you meet people and form lasting friendships, while getting some exercise and having good old fashioned competitive fun! But not everyone is aware of all the work that goes on behind the scenes of the social sports empire. Want to know the scoop behind it all? Here are interviews with some of the founders of our local rec leagues sharing their stories, challenges, and inspirations about creating some of the city?s most exhilarating social communities.

Jack Fan of DC Social Sports Club

Jack Fan
Age: 30
Name of League: DC Social Sports Club
Number of Participants in League: 9,000 actively throughout the year; 12,000 database
What is your day job? This is it. Running the league takes a lot of work behind the scenes, more than just showing up at games and supervising. There is a business side as well that takes a lot of organizing, planning and management. It?s not just a day job, it?s my day-to-day life.
What do you enjoy most about running the organization? ?I love when people really appreciate finding their passion within the sport. It?s great when someone feels excited about finding our league, especially when they?ve moved in from out of town and feel relieved to find an organization where they can continue playing their sport.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced when running your organization? ?It was difficult to go from treating this as a hobby to a company. I had to establish it as a business and people expect a lot from a social league. Meeting those standards requires good customer service and management skills. Running the organization has been about more than just playing the sports.
What do you hope that people get out of social sports? There is a wide range of sports in our league. I hope that people can show up and try something new, and hopefully find a sport they are passionate about. The social side of it is important, but I hope that people can socialize an build camaraderie through playing the sport on a more sophisticated level, in addition to the bar scene.
What is your favorite sport and why? ?Street Hockey. It?s a lot like fencing, there is a lot of physical contact between players. It?s fast paced, a lot of energy involved, and it can be a good form of stress relief. We are excited to be working on developing a field hockey division as well.

Robert Nowell of Zog Sports

Robert Nowell
Age:
29
Name of League: ZogSportsDC
Number of Participants in League: 5,000+ annually in DC; 100,000+ nationally
What inspired you to start the organization? I had worked for four years in structured finance in NYC. I played in ZogSportsNYC, and I loved the league and its mission. I was 26 at the time, and I decided to follow one of my passions: organizing fun through sports. I had done so for years, organizing my local pickup basketball games. I loved drafting weekly team emails and game recaps to my ZogNYC teams. Since I was already organizing sports for myself and friends, I thought why not do it for everyone?
What do you enjoy most about running the organization? I absolutely love the community of Zoggers. Everyone is a face of ZogSports, including our staff and players. I love going to Nats games or even the gym and bumping into fellow Zoggers. On July 4, I went to a few BBQs. At each one, there were various Zoggers across multiple teams and sports who met playing ZogSports (and a few at post-game happy hour). While I knew that some of these friendships existed and formed via Zog, I had no idea how close and interconnected so many Zoggers had become. One of the BBQs I attended was hosted by Zoggers Ginelle and Sebastian. In true Zog form, it started with a friendly pickup game of Touch Football, followed by an awesome backyard cookout (beer pong & Belly Ball, yes Belly Ball, included). There were easily five different Zog teams represented at the BBQ. Back in June, we hosted a DC Touch Football tourney, and one of the veteran NYC teams traveled down to partake. I can?t wait to see all the great things our national Zog community will do as we continue to grow and expand (now in NYC, NJ, DC, ATL, Twin Cities and coming soon LA & SF).
What do you hope that people get out of participating in social sports? First and foremost: easy fun. Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for Zoggers to play team sports and have fun doing so. Secondly, I hope that everyone gets the competition they are hoping for. Everyone has a different definition of fun. Some players want to go out there, get a sweat and a few smiles. Winning isn?t as important and that?s what makes it so fun. On the flip-side, some social athletes want to leave it all out on the field every time. Even though no one is getting paid to play that?s how these intense competitors define fun. I want everyone to find the level that is right for them and their friends. Finally, I hope all Zoggers feel and become a part of the greater Zog community. We spend a lot of time together, traveling to games, competing, hanging out at post-game happy hour. There is no reason to be strangers. Everyone including our players and staff come together to facilitate fun through sports (and of course post-game happy hour).
What is the biggest challenge you?ve faced when running the organization? Probably the biggest challenge I have faced is not being a native DC?er. I loved and believed in Zog so much that I was ready and willing to take it anywhere. Having moved to DC just months before running our very first league in Fall 2010, I spent a lot of time learning about DC (and I?m still learning). For the first few months, it was routine for me to get lost driving and end up somewhere in Virginia. I?m happy to announce that I no longer get lost navigating DC.
As an owner, do you yourself participate in teams? I do play in the leagues. We believe it?s very important to participate in the leagues we run. It allows us to connect with fellow Zoggers and to see things from the players? perspective.

Rachael Preston, Gautham Chowdhry, John Groth, Sara Delucas of DC Bocce

Sara Delucas
Age:
33
Name of League: DC Bocce
Number of Participants in League: 6,000
What inspired you to start the organization? We started in 2004. We played a couple seasons of kickball in Adams Morgan. Living on Capitol Hill there weren?t many sports offered at that point in time. We wanted to start something fun and social. We never thought it would grow to such proportions.
What is your day job? This is my day job. Running a social sports league is time consuming. We do it because we are passionate about our job and our members. I feel really fortunate to work for DC Bocce and see how big it?s grown.
What would you recommend to readers who are not very athletic, have never tired a social sport, but want to join a team? In regards to Bocce, you don?t really need athletic abilities. You can come in with no skill at all and it?s a very casual game. Some members are competitive and play in other sports, but bocce is more of a chance to socialize. There?s also more of an equality in the game between men and women.
As an owner, do you yourself participate in teams? I?ve played in the Dupont division, for the last 8 years.

Robert Albrecht of United Social Sports

Robert Albrecht
Age:
28
Name of League: United Social Sports, Capital Bocce, DC kickball
Number of participants in League: 2-5,000 per season. 14,000 per year
What is your day job? This is my full time job.
What inspired you to start the organization? In 2009 it started with a skeeball team. Then I wanted to start something bigger, different and fun, and focus on connecting people and giving them a good social experience.
What do you enjoy about running the organization? If I do my job well it means people are having a good time. I know that I won?t have to deliver any bad news if I?m doing well.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced when running the organization? Making sure all the pieces fit together from coordinating bar events to games and locations with the city. There is a lot of planning in making sure it all comes together.
What would you recommend to readers who are not very athletic but want to join a team? We welcome individuals and small groups of all athletic levels. We have a whole range of sports you can try out from shuffle board to dodgeball, so you can work your way up to the more competitive sports if you would like. You can also come out to our events such as the happy hours and see if you like the crowd. We have a partnership with 10Social in which we will be starting an information stand where you can come in and get more information about the league.

What is your day job?? I work for a medical non-profit working with committees to write quality control standards.
What do you hope that people get out of participating in social sports?? My sincere hope is that everyone has a great time and can create lasting friendships that can extend beyond each night we?re playing a certain sport.
As an owner, do you yourself participate in teams?? I do!? I think it?s important to really get involved in the gameplay aspect to ensure that when I am answering questions or adjusting rules I have a first-hand perspective on what works and what doesn?t.? Plus the sports we offer are tons of fun.
What is your favorite sport and why?? I actually don?t have a favorite, whatever we?re playing at that time of the year is my favorite.?
What would you recommend to readers who are not very athletic but want to join a team?? I would definitely recommend our league to anyone.? The goal of Happy Hour Sports is to provide a fun environment where the social aspect of our leagues is paramount.

Jeff Schrumm
Age:

What inspired you to start the league? Previous league I was involved with folded.
What do you enjoy most about running the organization? The interaction with the players.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced when running your organization?? Finding good consistent field space.
What do you hope that people get out of social sports? FUN!
What would you recommend to our readers who are not very athletic, have never tried a social sport, but may want to join a team? Try for a season and if you don?t like it you can at least say you tried.?

Dan Boger
Age:
34
Name of League: NAKID Social Sports
Number of Participants in League: 10,000
What inspired you to start the organization? A group of us played in another league about 6 years ago, but wanted more social events, so we started our own league.
What do you enjoy most about running the organization? Meeting lots of new people and providing a variety of sports that interest people.
What do you hope that people get out of participating in social sports??I hope people continue to have a great time and make new friendships and relationships.
As an owner, do you yourself participate in social sports? I sometimes play in our bar sports (cornhole, giant Jenga, giant connect 4) or our bowling leagues.
What is your favorite sport and why? ?I would say I love giant Jenga. ?It?s a fun game and you meet some fun people while enjoying a beer.

Eric Anderson of Social Sports Arlington/Bethesda

Eric Anderson
Age:
37
Name of League: Bethesda/Arlington Social Sports
Number of Participants in League: Bethesda: 2,500 Arlington: 500
What inspired you to start the organization? In 2004 we noticed with social sports in Bethesda there was a lack of social sports leagues. There were county sports leagues but not really any socially oriented league open to all play levels.
What do you enjoy most about running the organization? Going to the events that we offer and see how everyone?s having a good time.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced when running your organization? The biggest challenge has been being able to provide venues or sports to all levels of play. To address this we have introduced different levels to meet people?s abilities.
What would you recommend to readers who are not very athletic, have never tired a social sport, but want to join a team? I would recommend grabbing a friend and signing up as free agents in one of our light division sports.
What do you hope that people get out of participating in social sports? We want people to have a good time and meet other people. Over the years we?ve even had a couple of people meet and get married!

Jeremy Purcell of Fairfax Athletics Adult Social Sports League

Jeremy Purcell
Age:
37
Name of League: Fairfax Athletics Adult Social Sports League
Number of Participants in League: over 16,000 players and growing every season.
What is your day job?? Fairfax Athletics and GM of the NoVA Dome (7 Court Basketball Facility) are my full-time jobs.
What do you enjoy most about running the organization?? To be honest, I really enjoy promoting and growing adult sports in Northern Virginia.? When I moved here in 1999, I met all of my friends (including my wife) through the various sports that I played.? We would strategize throughout the week about upcoming opponents, and it would really help carry me through the work week. Our sports leagues are an easy way to meet new people, get some great exercise (FXA only offers true athletic sports), and relieve some of the stress that comes with everyday life.? With the help of my amazing staff and referees, it is crazy just how large our non-profit league has grown and I enjoy the fact that people are playing sports throughout the week and on weekends, rather than sitting at home surfing the internet or watching TV.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced when running your organization?
My biggest challenge is not letting my work interfere with the quality time I spend with my family and friends.? We employ a very small staff because we try to keep our league fees as low as possible.? My cell phone is constantly buzzing with emails, texts, and calls all hours of the day and night so I have to balance my work life and personal life.
As an owner, do you yourself participate in social sports? Absolutely, I have played every FXA sport except basketball because I can?t dribble or shoot.? I really wish a league like FXA existed when I was in my early 20s because I recently discovered that I love playing soccer, but I?m just not good at it.? Thank God for our casual leagues.
What is your favorite sport and why?? My favorite sport by far is Flag Football, and coincidentally it?s our most popular sport with 149 teams this spring season alone.? I love everything about flag football, the competition, the offensive and defensive strategy, the speed, the hand-eye coordination, the deep passes, the goal line stop, the pick 6, and finally the long chats after the game about specific plays. Quick story, after 17 seasons of playing FXA Flag Football, my team finally won a Championship.? And not only did we win the championship, but we shutout all three playoff teams.? It?s a day that I?ll never forget!
