The DNA barrel, which acts as a container, is held shut by special DNA latches that can recognize and seek out combinations of cell-surface proteins, including disease markers. When the latches find their targets they reconfigure, causing the two halves of the barrel to swing open and expose its payload. The container can hold various types of payloads, including specific molecules with encoded instructions that can interact with specific cell surface signaling receptors. The investigators used this system to deliver instructions, which were encoded in antibody fragments, to two different types of cancer cells - leukemia and lymphoma. In each case, the message to the cell was to activate its 'suicide switch' - a standard feature that allows aging or abnormal cells to be eliminated. And since leukemia and lymphoma cells speak different languages, the messages were written in different antibody combinations. ... We can finally integrate sensing and logical computing functions via complex, yet predictable, nanostructures - some of the first hybrids of structural DNA, antibodies, aptamers, and metal atomic clusters - aimed at useful, very specific targeting of human cancers."

Sales of Kinkade artwork surge after painter dies

PLACERVILLE, Calif. (AP) ? In Thomas Kinkade's hometown, at the gallery where his art career first took off, an original painting by the self-described "Painter of Light" sat unsold for years. Buyers were perhaps deterred by the $110,000 asking price.

The painting, "Sunday Outing," was being sold on consignment, and when word came Friday night that Kinkade had died, its owner called and asked for the selling price to be raised to $150,000, gallerist Nathan Ross said Monday. The painting sold hours later.

It wasn't the only one. Barraged with orders from customers in person, on the phone and online, Ross has called in as much extra help as he can find. He said on a typical day he'll sell one to five Kinkade pieces through the gallery's website.

In the last 48 hours, he says he's received about 300 online orders.

"Phones are just ringing nonstop. We have five lines and they're constantly lit up. People are waiting in line to buy paintings," Ross said. "It's just been a real juggling match to make sure everyone gets taken care of."

Other galleries across the country that specialize in Kinkade's work are reporting a similar surge in sales following the popular painter's death at age 54.

John Vassallo, who owns five Kinkade galleries in New York and New Jersey, says sales on Saturday reached half his typical sales for the entire month of December, the busiest month of the year. Like most Kinkade retailers, Vassallo traffics not in originals but limited edition reproductions, many of which come hand-signed by the artist himself.

Any piece with Kinkade's original signature is in high demand at a cost of $8,000 to $15,000, said Vassallo, who counted Kinkade as a personal friend.

"It's been a tragic cost unfortunately," Vassallo said of Kinkade's death, "but I know that Thom is looking down and bringing the people."

Vassallo also said he believed Kinkade likely left behind unreleased work that would help feed public demand even after the painter's death. The Morgan Hill company that produces and distributes Kinkade's art hinted in a weekend message to gallery owners and employees that such work did indeed exist.

"He leaves behind a rich legacy of published and unpublished work and has inspired generations of artists to follow in his brushstrokes," Thomas Kinkade Co. CEO John Hasting wrote in the statement. Hasting said later that the company was heartened by the outpouring of appreciation of Kinkade's work. The company hasn't offered any specifics on how much sales have increased.

Though no one knows how long it will last, the renewed interest in Kinkade would seem to represent something of a reversal of fortune.

In 2010, one of Kinkade's companies filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after many years of huge commercial success. The bankruptcy filing came as the company had started making payments on an almost $3 million court award to two disgruntled former gallerists.

Kinkade died Friday at his home in Los Gatos of what his family said was apparent natural causes. An autopsy was performed Monday, but results are not yet available pending further tests, the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner's Office said.

ScienceDaily (Apr. 9, 2012) ? The trade in live plants from around the world has become a major industry in the United States, with new imports now valued at more than $500 billion annually. According to a study conducted by researchers at UC Santa Barbara's National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, however, what has proved to be a boon for the economy has also been shown to have devastating effects on the environment.

The multidisciplinary working group found that almost 70 percent of the most damaging non-native forest insects and diseases currently afflicting U.S. forests arrived via imported live plants. The group's findings appear in the current issue of the journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment.

The study, led by Andrew Liebhold, a Forest Service researcher with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, shows that in the last 43 years, the quantity of plant imports to the U.S. has risen by more than 500 percent, peaking at 3.15 billion plants in 2007. Nearly half of the imported live plants entering the U.S. are destined for either California or Florida.

Once introduced, some of these imported insects and disease organisms become established, and a fraction of those become major economic pests. For example, Sudden Oak Death, which is caused by the plant pathogen Phytophthora ramorum, was introduced into the Bay Area and Big Sur regions of California via nursery plants. The disease has now spread through 14 counties in California, as well as southern Oregon, where it has caused large-scale die-off of tanoaks, live oaks, and black oaks.

The authors studied 82 high-impact invasive insects and diseases in detail. Of these, 95 percent of sap-feeding insects and 89 percent of foliage-feeding insects probably arrived on live plants. In contrast, roughly 85 percent of wood- and phloem-boring insects likely entered the country on wood packaging materials, logs, lumber, or other wood sources.

"The demand for live plants from outside the United States is not likely to diminish," said Liebhold. "As global trade expands, our knowledge of pest pathways must be improved to ensure trade is accomplished with minimal environmental degradation."

According to Liebhold, the working group's current research provides specific information that is critical to the development of policies to reduce the risk of pest species associated with the trade in live plants. Current policies are based on outdated assumptions about the size and number of shipments, and do not address the very large number of plants now grown abroad for direct resale in the U.S., he said.

The authors describe several possible means to increase bio-security, including intensified efforts at plant inspection stations; precautionary measures that restrict plants from entering the U.S. until they have been assessed as posing very little risk; expanding the post-entry quarantine currently applied mainly to some crop plants to include ornamental plants; developing better advance knowledge about pest insects and pathogens; and developing integrated systems approaches that depend on expanded partnerships between researchers and industry.

Facebook rolled out an update this morning that adds support for the new iPad's Retina display to its iPad application. According to the release notes in iTunes, users with the new iPad will now see "a crisp, high resolution interface." In the article by weight loss healthier than you have read the trend seems to focus on cutting fat and reducing your carbohydrates. What are all well and good, but there are many who seem lost in between. I think most of the time our health is not really focused on weight loss much more him. You can lose weight and still healthy. So in this article a healthy weight loss should be a balance. Just because someone can get a pound a go on a low fat, low carbohydrate diet does not mean they are healthy. I lost weight because this system and feel so weak at times and not very healthy.

What is the answer? I think the answer is that we have simply not getting the vitamins your body needs. Not because of insufficient weight loss is good, but we can not empty the nutrients we need if we are not complete. This is especially important as we age and our fertile years. Time has a way of saying that we need more than anything in our bodies that we do not receive. Personally, I have been taking vitamins for 7 years and I can say very little that I was in the doctor?s office. I can also testify that the good quality vitamin helps me not feel hungry. I think it?s because my body is getting what it needs each day. Personally, I have the product for 6 weeks and have more energy than I have in years. I eat well and drink two delicious shakes a day and I lost weight, but I?m healthier because of all the vitamins in the product. "Friends of Syria" try to turn screws on Assad

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Western and Arab nations stepped up verbal pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday, mistrusting his acceptance of a plan to end a year of bloodshed, but stopped short of arming rebels or fully recognizing an opposition council.

In a sign of impatience with what they see as stalling by Assad, the "Friends of Syria" urged peace envoy Kofi Annan to set a timeline for next steps, including a return to the U.N. Security Council, if the Syrian leader fails to halt bloodshed.

Violence has raged on unabated despite Annan's mediation.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported at least 41 people killed across Syria on Sunday, including five in bombardment of pro-opposition districts in Homs.

In a final communique, the 83-nation group said Assad did not have an open-ended opportunity to meet his commitments to Annan, who is acting for the United Nations and Arab League.

"The regime will be judged by its deeds rather than its promises," the communique said. Security Council members China and Russia and Syria's ally Iran were among countries that stayed away from the conference in Istanbul.

Assad has accepted, but not yet implemented, Annan's six-point peace plan, which calls for the military to cease fire, withdraw from towns and cities, and allow humanitarian access.

"We will not let the Syrian regime misuse another opportunity, which is the last chance for the situation in Syria," Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told a news conference after the meeting he hosted.

The "Friends of Syria" recognized the opposition Syrian National Council (SNC) as a legitimate representative of all Syrians, and "noted" it as the main opposition interlocutor with the international community - wording that fell short of full recognition of a group hampered by chronic disunity.

The group made no mention of supporting or arming the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA), as advocated by some Gulf Arab states, but said it would "continue to work on additional appropriate measures with a view to the protection of the Syrian people".

AID FOR REBELS

Hardline Gulf states are likely to interpret the phrase as a license to fund, if not arm, the FSA, while the United States and others will see it as allowing supplies of non-lethal equipment to the loosely organized armed opposition to Assad.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the conference her government was supplying "communications equipment that will help activists organize, evade attacks by the regime and connect to the outside world" and was "discussing with our international partners how best to expand this support".

Clinton berated Assad for not acting on Annan's peace plan. "Nearly a week has gone by, and we have to conclude that the regime is adding to its long list of broken promises," she said.

"There is no more time for excuses or delays ... This is a moment of truth," Clinton told a news conference later.

Western powers have been wary of military intervention in Syria, but Davutoglu sounded an alarm bell, comparing the situation there to the plight of Bosnia in the 1990s.

"In the case of Bosnia, the international community was too slow ... therefore we lost many people," he said. "In the case of Syria ... we have to act without delay."

Chris Phillips, a Middle East expert at the University of London, said the Istanbul meeting had produced little.

"It's another damp squib from the international community, reflecting the fact that their hands are tied," he said, citing divisions over arming the rebels between the West and Arab League hawks such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

"They have a very limited amount of leverage that they can place on the Assad regime," Phillips said, noting that the group's endorsement of Annan's plan had effectively dropped previous Arab and Western demands for Assad's removal.

Western and Arab sanctions on Syria have failed so far to soften the government's crackdown on its opponents.

SNC leader Burhan Ghalioun pressed the "Friends of Syria" to strengthen the rebel army and open humanitarian aid corridors.

He chided foreign powers and the Arab League for failing to reach a political agreement against Assad. "For this reason the Syrian regime has carried out more massacres and has been encouraged by this, but enough is enough," Ghalioun declared.

In a separate statement, the SNC requested communications and other non-lethal equipment for the FSA, and possibly arms.

"The provision of arms is not our preferred option. We know it carries high risks of escalation into civil war but we cannot stand back and watch our people being massacred," it said.

NO RESPITE FROM VIOLENCE

The "Friends of Syria" urged Syrians, especially those serving in the military, security agencies and government, "not to be a part of the atrocities committed by the regime".

The group called for international action to deny arms supplies to Damascus, and demanded humanitarian access, with daily two-hour pauses in fighting to allow aid to be delivered.

Syrian media derided the Istanbul meeting, which the Baath newspaper described as "a regional and international scramble to find ways of killing more Syrians and destroying their society and country, to reach the broad goal of weakening Syria".

Around 50 Assad supporters protested outside the conference centre, waving Syrian, Russian and Chinese flags and brandishing pictures of the Syrian leader. "Allah, Syria, Bashar, that's it" and "Down, down USA" they chanted, before police removed them.

Annan will brief the U.N. Security Council on Monday on his efforts to calm a conflict in which Syrian security forces have killed more than 9,000 people, by a U.N. estimate, while rebels have killed 3,000 troops and police, according to Damascus.

His six-point plan demands that Assad order his military to cease fire, withdraw troops from cities and open daily windows for humanitarian aid, but does not require him to step down.

The rebel FSA said on Saturday it would stop shooting if Assad pulled heavy weaponry out of urban areas, but Damascus said its forces must stay to maintain security.

If Annan's plan falters, the next steps could include a return to the Security Council for a binding resolution, with increased pressure on Assad's allies Russia and China, which have endorsed Annan's mission, to get tough with Damascus.

If the former U.N. chief signals progress, Council diplomats say work could start on a resolution to send 200 to 250 unarmed U.N. observers to Syria to monitor an eventual ceasefire.
