Harley-Davidson from tsunami headed to museum

Peter Mark / The Canadian Press via AP

A rust-encrusted Harley-Davidson motorcycle that was swept away by the Japan tsunami in March 2011 was found by Peter Mark in April, washed up on an island off the coast of British Columbia. It's now headed to a Harley museum.

By James Eng, msnbc.com

A Japanese man?s Harley-Davidson motorcycle that washed up on the shores of western Canada more than a year after it was swept away by the devastating tsunami will be preserved in a Harley museum in the U.S.

The 2004 FXSTB Softail Night Train motorcycle will be permanently housed in the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wis., as a memorial to the victims of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, which swamped several coastal towns in northeastern Japan and left more than 15,000 people dead.

?It is truly amazing that my Harley-Davidson motorcycle was recovered in Canada after drifting for more than a year,? said the bike?s owner, Ikuo Yokoyama, in a press release issued Friday by Deeley Harley-Davidson, the Canadian distributor of Harleys. ?I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt appreciation to Peter Mark, the finder of my motorcycle. Due to circumstances caused by the disaster, I have been so far unable to visit him in Canada to convey my gratitude.?

Mark found the motorcycle, still bearing its Japanese license plate, while driving his ATV on an isolated beach on Graham Island on the west coast of British Columbia on April 18. The bike, along with several other items, was inside a rusted cargo van container that apparently drifted more than 4,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean.

?You just never know what you?re going to stumble upon when you go for a drive, and lo and behold you just come across something that?s out of this world,? Mark told CBC at the time.

The motorcycle was eventually traced to the 29-year-old Yokoyama.

The tsunami destroyed Yokoyama?s home in Miyagi prefecture and also claimed the lives of three family members, according to Japanese media reports. Yokoyama currently lives in temporary housing in Miyagi prefecture.

He said the motorcycle was being kept in a storage container behind his house when the tsunami struck.

The Harley will soon be transported to the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee.

Harley-Davidson offered to return the rust-encrusted bike to him and to restore it to running condition but Yokoyama respectfully declined, the company said.

?Since the motorcycle was recovered, I have discussed with many people about what to do with it. I would be delighted if it could be preserved in its current condition and exhibited to the many visitors to the Harley Davidson Museum as a memorial to a tragedy that claimed thousands of lives,? Yokoyama was quoted as saying in Friday?s press release.

Harley-Davidson has offered to fly him to visit the museum and meet Marks, the Canadian who retrieved the bike. Yokoyama said he would like to do so ?when things have calmed down.?

?My heart really goes out to Ikuo Yokoyama and all the survivors of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami for everything that was taken from them. I cannot even begin to comprehend the loss of family, friends, and community,? Mark was quoted by Harley-Davidson as saying. ?I think it is fitting that the Harley, which was swept across the Pacific Ocean by the tsunami, will end up in the Harley-Davidson Museum as a memorial to that tragic event. It has an interesting and powerful story to convey preserved in its current state.?

The motorcycle has since been transferred to a Harley dealership in Vancouver. Plans for its transportation to the Harley museum are being developed.

Hysteria | Movie Reviews | Kelly Vance | East Bay Express

Tanya Wexler's Hysteria is a particularly agreeable costumed comic-drama not just because of its front story ? about a doctor in Victorian London who created a sensation and got rich by developing the first "electric personal massager," aka vibrator, to treat the titular "women's disorder" ? but also for its subplot, in which the doctor learns something about social justice and how the other half lives, from his liberated lady friend.

Young physician Mortimer Granville (Hugh Dancy), a conventional but generous-natured sort, moves up in the world when he joins the practice of Dr. Robert Dalrymple (Jonathan Pryce). Their wealthy female patients greatly enjoy having their private parts manipulated to relieve their "nagging thoughts," but the procedure takes an hour and fatigues the doctors' digits. Then up pops the new invention and satisfies everyone but Dalrymple's feminist, socialist daughter Charlotte (Maggie Gyllenhaal), who runs a settlement house charity with her own limited funds, for the benefit of people who can't pay for their decidedly more urgent health needs.

One man's "paroxysm" leads to one woman's blessing as Mortimer discovers there's more than one kind of hysteria, and laughs ensue that won't make anyone wince. Director Wexler, working from a screenplay by Stephen Dyer and Jonah Lisa Dyer, adapted from an idea by Howard Gensler, portrays the film's class tension as another facet of the disconnect between Victorian manners and messy, unmentionable real life, with fine support by Rupert Everett as an electronics whiz and Felicity Jones as the doctor's rather vacant other daughter, who never quite catches the buzz. If you could find a movie house that's showing both Hysteria and Whores' Glory, you'd have the makings of a memorable date-night double feature ? with the right open-minded date, that is.

Udonis Haslem Suspended For Game 6 Of Heat-Pacers, Dexter Pittman Out 3 Games

MIAMI -- Udonis Haslem insists he meant no harm. The NBA deemed otherwise, and the Miami Heat will be without one of their co-captains when they try to close out the Indiana Pacers on Thursday night.

Haslem was suspended for Game 6 of the Miami-Indiana Eastern Conference semifinal series, a matchup where emotions boiled over in a runaway Heat victory on Tuesday night. The NBA also said Miami reserve center Dexter Pittman will miss three games in response to his flagrant foul against Indiana backup guard Lance Stephenson in the final seconds of Game 5.

Indiana's Tyler Hansbrough was not suspended, although the league upgraded his foul against Miami's Dwyane Wade to a flagrant-2 on Wednesday ? which, if called that way during Game 5, would have brought an automatic ejection. Hansbrough struck Wade in the head, opening a cut over his right eye. Moments later, Haslem committed a flagrant foul against Hansbrough, clearly in response to the play against Wade.

So while Haslem sits Thursday, Hansbrough may play.

"It's very disappointing, obviously," Miami forward Shane Battier said Wednesday night. "But we're a resilient group. ... The verdict process is a mystery to players, and so we don't get caught up in it. We can't control it. We know the NBA's going to do what they feel they need to do and we need to live with the consequences. So it's really out of our hands, not worth getting riled up. We're going to put together an effort that will make Udonis and Dexter proud."

The Heat lead the series 3-2, after a 115-83 win Tuesday night in a game that had the three flagrant fouls on the court, accusations of dirty play afterward and finally with Pacers team president Larry Bird telling The Indianapolis Star that his team was "soft" in Game 5.

"I agree with his assessment. We did play soft," Indiana's Danny Granger said Wednesday. "We got smacked around. We got beat up, we got bullied, and we really didn't respond well."

Countered Miami's LeBron James, the NBA's reigning MVP: "He's just trying to amp them up. That's all. That's all it is. He knows his team isn't soft. But with them, with their backs against the wall at this point, he knows what he's doing. He's not the executive of the year for no reason."

Pittman logged only six minutes in the playoffs anyway, his presence in the postseason barely noticed until he laid out Stephenson ? who made at least one choke sign toward James earlier in the series ? with a forearm to the chin and shoulder areas.

"Hard fouls are part of the playoffs," Indiana coach Frank Vogel said Wednesday. "Fouls to the head have no place in this game, not by us, not by Miami, not by any other team in any other series. With all the concussion research that's been going on over the last few years it's a very serious matter and it just doesn't have any place in the game."

Wade sounded somewhat amused that Granger ? who's been whistled for three technicals in the series ? was one of the Pacers suggesting Haslem and Pittman should be suspended. Wade and Granger have had words during the series.

"We're not in here crying about the fouls," Wade said. "They fouled us. ... We're moving on to Game 6. We're not going to worry about what happened in Game 5. For us, it's about moving forward."

The Pacers may move forward without Granger, who sprained his left ankle in Game 5.

Granger was in flip-flops when Wednesday's practice ended, saying he was on painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication. Stephenson, who had X-rays taken to rule out any fractures to his collarbone or shoulder areas, did not practice.

"In my mind, I'm going to play," Granger said. "Elimination game, I have to play."

Vogel sounded concerned, but optimistic.

"Very much hoping he'll be available tomorrow," Vogel said. "He's a gamer. I'm thinking he'll play. But his ankle's pretty bad, so we'll see."

Vogel called Miami floppers before the series started, and it's been gritty throughout. The teams combined to shoot 66 free throws in Game 1, and there have been a combined nine technicals and flagrants called in the four games since. Tension also increased after cameras caught Stephenson making a choke sign during Indiana's Game 3 victory, and Juwan Howard confronting him about his antics before Game 4.

"It's been a physical series, started by them," Wade said.

And James said he doesn't expect things to cool down when the Pacers try to save their season in Game 6.

"I always feel like in a playoff series or certain regular-season games that a team may be trying to go for me," James said. "It's happened. I'm not saying guys are playing dirty, but certain guys say, `You know, if you hard-foul LeBron, get him off the ball, he'll stop being aggressive and things like that.' I know when it's happening and I see when it's about to happen. I'm always in protect mode. I've been hard-fouled a lot."

James said one of those situations happened in Game 5. Indiana forward David West ? who left Tuesday's game with what the team called a sprained knee, though he insisted Wednesday he was not hurt ? took exception to a play where he was knocked backward, saying a Heat player fell into his knee. On that play, replays showed West was boxed out by Battier, but it appeared no one hit West in the knee area.

Not long afterward, West fouled James, who said he saw it coming.

"He was the one on the floor and I was the one still standing," James said. "So I started laughing at that. But he tried to get me."

West said on Wednesday that if Indiana wants to force a Game 7 in Miami, it simply needs to play better on both ends than it did on Tuesday night.

"You've just got to stand your ground. I think that's the biggest thing," West said. "It was unfortunate, the play at the end of the game on Lance. But we've just got to deal with it, man up, handle it ? like I said, the best way you can, within the rules."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Former major leaguer David Segui (suh-GEE') says he was told as far back as 2001 that Roger Clemens' strength coach had kept evidence against the seven-time Cy Young Award winner.

Segui testified Thursday about a telephone conversion he had with Brian McNamee 11 years ago. Segui said McNamee "mentioned that he had kept darts to get his wife off his back."

The jury hearing the Clemens perjury trial will have to assume that "darts" means "needles." Segui wasn't allowed by the court to make that connection on the stand.

Segui's testimony is consistent with McNamee's, who testified last week he saved waste from an alleged 2001 steroids injection of Clemens to placate his wife.

Clemens is charged with lying to Congress when he denied using steroids and human growth hormone.

Author says GOP broke Washington

Top Line

Scholar Norman Ornstein is pointing fingers in a new book, "It's Even Worse Than It Looks," co-authored with Thomas Mann. Congress is partisan and polarizing, and one party,?said Ornstein,?bears the brunt of the blame.

"I wouldn't say it's all Republicans," said Ornstein, "it's 80-20 at this point."

"When you look at the data, including voting records?... the Democrats have moved left, to probably?their own 25 yard line. President Obama's probably around the 40," said the American Enterprise Institute scholar. "The Republicans have moved behind their own goal post."

Check out this week's Top Line to hear Ornstein break down recent history and the gridlock in Washington.
